چکیده

We have used the Palomar 200” Adaptive Optics (AO) system to directly detect the astrometric brown dwarf GJ 802B reported by Pravdo et al. 2005. This observation is achieved with a novel combination of aperture masking interferometry and AO. The dynamical masses are 0.175±0.021 M⊙ and 0.064±0.032 M⊙ for the primary and secondary respectively. The inferred absolute H band magnitude of GJ 802B is MH=12.8 resulting in a model-dependent Teff of 1850 ± 50K and mass range of 0.057–0.074 M⊙.

Dynamical Mass of Gj 802b: a Brown Dwarf in a Triple System

We report a dynamical measurement of the mass of the brown dwarf GJ 802B using aperture-masking interferometry and astrometry. In addition, we report the discovery that GJ 802A is itself a close spectroscopic noneclipsing binary with a 19 hr period. We find the mass of GJ 802B to be 0:063 0:005M . GJ 802 has kinematics inconsistent with a young star and more consistent with the thick-disk popula...

Searching for Young Planets with Sparse Aperture Masking

We describe an ongoing survey to directly detect substellar and planetary companions to nearby young stars. This survey uses adaptive optics and nonredundant aperture-masking interferometry to achieve typical contrast limits of ∆K ∼6 at the diffraction limit, probing a completely new regime of parameter space. These observations have revealed many new stellar companions, but only a few companio...

Precision Masses of the Low - Mass Binary System Gj 623

We have used Aperture Masking Interferometry and Adaptive Optics (AO) at the Palomar 200” to obtain precise mass measurements of the binary M dwarf GJ 623. AO observations spread over 3 years combined with a decade of radial velocity measurements constrain all orbital parameters of the GJ 623 binary system accurately enough to critically challenge the models. The dynamical masses measured are m...

Adaptive Optics Observations of Exoplanets, Brown Dwarfs, and Binary Stars

The current direct observations of brown dwarfs and exoplanets have been obtained using instruments not specifically designed for overcoming the large contrast ratio between the host star and any wide-separation faint companions. However, we are about to witness the birth of several new dedicated observing platforms specifically geared towards high contrast imaging of these objects. The Gemini ...

Crossing the Brown Dwarf Desert Using Adaptive Optics : A Very Close L - Dwarf Companion to the Nearby Solar Analog HR 7672

We have found a very faint companion to the active solar analog HR 7672 (HD 190406; GJ 779; 15 Sge). Three epochs of high resolution imaging using adaptive optics (AO) at the Gemini-North and Keck II Telescopes demonstrate that HR 7672B is a common proper motion companion, with a separation of 0. 79 (14 AU) and a 2.16 μm flux ratio of 8.6 mags. Using follow-up K-band spectroscopy from Keck AO+N...
